Denver Weather

The city of Denver is the capital and the largest city in Colorado. The city is located at 5,280 feet (1,609.344 meters) above the sea level and that is where the city gets the nickname of Mile High City. A lot of people tend to associate the Denver weather with what you would see in the Rockies when in reality the climate is different. Some of the ski results in the Rocky Mountains are located at an altitude of 10,000 feet (3,000 meters) and in some cases even higher. That means that while it may be snowing pretty hard in the ski resorts, Denver may even have warm weather. That statement does not mean that Denver is temperate year round. In fact, the winters can start early.

How Cold Does Denver Get?

The Denver weather can be rather cool during the winter months and in some cases much earlier and later than that. Snow is a possibility as early as September and as late as May. The coldest temperature ever recorded in the city of Denver was -29 Fahrenheit (-34 Celsius) and the coldest month is January which sees an average low temperature of 18.5 Fahrenheit (-7.5 Celsius). The average low temperature does not go above freezing from November through March so we at The Denver Weather.Net recommend that you bring layers for your winter visit.

What About The Snow?

With all those cool temperatures throughout the year, the Denver weather can also give you a great deal of snow. The citizens of Denver usually see their first snow in the month of September and the last one all the way in May. That leaves them with only three full months without snow. The snowiest month of the year is March with an average of 10 inches (25.4 centimeters) of snow each year. You can attribute the amounts of snow to the altitude in the Mile High City. From December through March every month will have at least 5 snowy days each year on average. Because of the high amounts of snow, you should check the weather conditions at www.thedenverweather.net because the snow can be a source of delays. Also check with your airline if you are landing or leaving anytime from October through April.

The Summer

The city of Denver is located in a continental semi-arid climate zone and to the citizens of Denver that means that the summers can be warm but high humidity levels are not the norm. The month of July is the hottest month of the year with an average high temperature of 88.7 Fahrenheit (31.5 Celsius). At night those temperatures can drop to 59.4 Fahrenheit (15.2 Celsius). The summers have been through cold snaps in the past. The lowest temperature ever recorded during the summer in the Denver weather is 30 Fahrenheit (-1 Celsius) but most of the time the days will be warm and nights will require that you wear a light sweater. Sunshine

With all the snow that you can see when you visit Denver, you may be wondering how much sunshine the city gets. The fact is that the city of Denver does see a lot of sunshine throughout the year. The average mean sunshine hours each year for the city of Denver is 3,106.1. That is much higher than cities located in the northeast or Midwest. The cold temperatures can make you forget about the sunshine in some cases but you should always pack sunblock and sunglasses because the sun can feel rather strong in the city. We at www.thedenverweather.net also recommend that you wear a hat at all times of the year. The combination of hat and sunglasses will protect you from the snow reflection.

Best Time To Visit

The city of Denver is beautiful year round even in the middle of the winter you will get a few days that reach the 60s (above 15.56 Celsius) in temperature. The view can be breathtaking during all four seasons but let's face it, not everyone will enjoy the cold weather. If you like to be outdoors then visiting in the months of May, June, September and October will give you the best weather. During those months the temperatures do not get as high and you also see less rain. If, on the other hand, you love winter activities then anytime from November through March will be perfect to satisfy your winter sports needs. The summers are mild and are also great.
